Troubleshooting Milo names

Issue: Name list is blank

If you want to change your Milo name to another name in the list but you see a blank screen instead of a list in Milo Link, please be patient. You should see a notification that the names are downloading. Simply wait for a minute while allowing the download to finish. Then you will be able to select the name you prefer from the list.

Here's what's happening: Each time Milo Link connects to a Milo, the app checks to see if it already has a list of names associated with the current software version running. If no such list is stored in Milo Link, the list needs to be downloaded. You may have to wait up to a minute depending on how busy Bluetooth is - please stay on the name change screen while the list is populating.

Issue: A recorded name can't be typed in

You must first record a name if you want to name it in Milo Link.

If you are on version 10.0.1, you need to be grouped and online if you want to type in the name after recording. This is a bug in that version.

Issue: Name is too long

The text field is limited to 2-8 letters only.

Issue: Recorded name has disappeared

There are 2 reasons this can happen:

  • You did a factory reset or reinstalled the firmware. A factory reset resets all settings to defaults and removes personalized data like recorded names - as you'd expect from devices. Recorded names are kept during normal power cycles in the most recent firmware.
  • You recorded a name, then typed in a name that matches one of the available built-in names. This will play the built-in version instead. 
    • Check the name list before recording so you know in advance if you'll run into this. If you do, you have 2 options:
      • First choose that name in the list and save it. Then, do the recording. You should now have your recording spelled as in the list.
      • Spell the name differently. This is only a fallback option that not everyone wants to do.
    • When you check the list, remember that names are limited to 8 letters. So if you have a longer name where the first 8 matches a built-in 8-letter name, you will encounter this issue. For example, the name "Christian" is in the list. If your name is "Christiane", the text will match on the first 8 letters, unless you abbreviate your typed name differently. For example "Chrstne" Remember that these are merely text labels and are completely separate from the audio content.

Issue: A name is not available in my Milo language

All default nature names, such as Alpine or Tundra, are available in every language, in the voice of that language. Most personal names are only available when your Milo is set to speak US English. 

Issue: A name that you know is in the list doesn't show up

This is a very unusual issue, but we've seen it happen. Your favorite built-in name suddenly doesn't show up in the name list. One of 2 possibilities:

  • We removed the name or changed the spelling. This could happen but not likely if it's one of the default nature names, spelling alphabet names, or someone on Team Milo. :) 
  • Something happened that made the list glitch when it was built. Do the following:
    1. Reboot your phone, and open Milo Link.
    2. Connect the name-missing Milo to Milo Link. Then tap-to-choose in the list of Milos.
    3. Tap Name, allow the list to fully load, then check if the name is still missing
    4. If it's still missing, tap "Unpair this Milo." Accept, then close the app.
    5. Reopen the app, reconnect the Milo, load and verify the name list. The name should now have reappeared.
