How do I use Milo?

Milo is a wearable communication device with integrated speaker and microphones. It creates its own radio mesh network, so you don't need a phone, network connection or Wi-Fi. Just grab your Milo, clip it on and go! It enables a group of friends or family to talk to each other during a shared activity.

To start using Milo, all you need to do is:

  1. Power on Milo.
    1. If it's your first time, take 2 minutes to step through the tutorial that starts automatically
  2. Create a group with another Milo user by holding the Milos close while pressing the side button until you hear "Connected."
  3. Using one of the Milo Clips, attach Milo somewhere that keeps it close to your mouth and ears without getting in the way of your activity. Higher is better than lower.
    1. For added security, attach the other end of the attached lanyard to something near the Milo & clip. This way, in case Milo somehow gets detached during your activities, it won't escape.
  4. After that you simply continue your conversation naturally while your eyes are on your surroundings and your hands stay on handlebars or ski poles. Milo is hands-free and eyes-free. No need to push buttons, no need to take turns - just continue your conversation naturally while your eyes are on your surroundings and your hands stay on handlebars or ski poles.

Milo uses many ways to communicate with you, including sound, light, and even vibration. Because Milo is designed primarily for eyes free, hands-free use, sound is Milo's communication method of choice: Milo keeps you updated through spoken messages and chimes ("earcons"). The front LED ring visually backs up some of those heard messages. Using simple button presses, you can ask Milo about things like its current battery level or the whereabouts of your group.

You might be surprised by not hearing others right after you join them. Milo uses Adaptive Volume: When Milos in a group are near each other, each one automatically lowers their own sound from the other nearby Milos. This allows you to talk to each other directly without muting the mic, which in turn means other members further away can still hear you. Pretty cool! You can customize Adaptive Volume in the Milo Link app.
