International travel with Milo

Before travel

Check for software updates

If you plan to use Milo abroad, we highly recommend you install the latest Milo software update on all Milos before leaving home. After installing, power up and verify everything works as expected. Then turn off the Milos and pack them away for travel.

Also verify that you have the latest Milo Link version installed on your mobile device before you leave, and update if needed.

Check certification for use

Milo is certified for use in the country in which it was purchased. Make sure that Milos are certified for use any other country and region where you plan to use them. Start here and here

Each country has their own standards and laws governing the use of radios. Many countries have adopted common standards. For example, USA and Canada require FCC certification, while most European countries require ETSI certification. If you plan to bring Milos to another country, be sure you are aware of the local rules and laws before bringing them on your trip. Not complying with local rules and laws may result in fines and/or confiscation of equipment.

Packing for your trip

Milo’s battery is a fully rechargeable battery that is fully integrated in the Milo unit, just like the battery in your phone. That means it can’t be removed. Pack Milos in your hand luggage, and keep them powered off and stowed during your flight.

Don’t forget to bring the included USB-C charging cable, as well as appropriate chargers and plugs for where you’re going.

After arrival

Setting your region

Note: If you are on a ship or boat and in international waters, region changing will not work as there is no valid region.

Milo uses GPS via Milo Link to determine its physical location and set the correct geographical region to best utilize features as well as stay legal. When you travel with Milo to a new region, e.g. from Europe to the U.S., follow the steps below to set the region.

Milo and Milo Link will set the correct region after you arrive in a different part of the world.

  1. If you use VPN, temporarily disable it until region has been acquired
  2. Wait for your mobile phone to establish its location, then close and reopen Milo Link.
    • A reliable approach to do that is:
      • Make sure you have a good phone signal – being outdoors is often best for a quick connection
      • Open Google/Apple Maps to verify that your phone’s GPS has achieved a position lock
  3. Power up your Milos.
  4. Now open Milo Link and reconnect to Milo Link.
  5. With your Milos powered up and connected, choose each Milo in turn in Milo Link:
    • On the settings screen, the region should be highlighted in red with the only option being to change to the region you’re in.
    • If the location has not yet been detected, it will now start automatically. You’ll see “Detecting your location…
  6. If you still see that message after 30 seconds, go back to the list of Milos and tap the Milo again to restart the process. If you’re having trouble, reboot your phone to reset its GPS before trying again.
